“Old habits die hard”
True to this famous proverb, some of the habits we grown as a child follow us till our last days. It is very easy to learn something new when you were a child.
It is because the minds of the kids are more creative and flexible to learn new things. As we grow up, our pre-frontal cortex becomes more active and it helps us to see things exactly the way it is rather than a creative approach.
It is a universally accepted fact that meditation improves our way of life. It is a proven truth that when meditation is done regularly, it helps mitigate the symptoms of stress and anxiety.
Let’s see some simple tips to encourage our kids to meditate daily
1. Lead by Example
We all know how cut-copy-paste works. Kids often mirror what they see in their parents, teachers and friends. Their brains are wired to observe, learn and replicate at a tender age. They are also very curious and that explains the endless questions you answer everyday as a parent.
Anything that attracts their curiosity will be explored by them. So if you like them to meditate daily, the best way to start is to make them see how you meditate. They will definitely ask questions and even bother you while you are meditating but it’s a great way to start. It gives you an opportunity to explain them the benefits of meditation.
2. Use Storytelling
There is a reason we love to hear stories even after we become adults. It is because we started loving them when we were kids. Make them understand how our mind is filled with thoughts which may be happy, sad, angry or upset and how meditation makes your mind to calm down.
Through simple stories, analogies or experiments, you will be able to convey the benefits of meditation to your children. When you make it more relatable for the child, they will start believing that.
3. Discuss their experience and listen to their imagination
Kids are wildly imaginative and they love to talk more about their day at school. You will be amazed at the number of things that come to their attention on a single day of school.
Ask them about their happy experiences, sad ones and the times they felt angry. Share your personal stories or experiences where you felt the same way. This will help them understand the basic human emotions are experienced by everyone.
Before we teach them how to prepare their mind, it is our responsibility to help them understand the emotions on our mind first.
4. Make it special
To make it a daily routine, we need to make it special for our kids. They can pick their favorite spot in the house and they can even choose to bring their favorite toy or their favorite picture with them to their spot. Since this is a new habit, you can ask them to use a flower pot to sow seeds to see how it grows into a plant.
Connecting their meditation with the growth of plant will encourage them to practice it daily. Eventually they will understand themselves and the plant.
